John Godfrey

Role: Pastor - Immanuel Baptist Church

Pastor John W. Godfrey Jr. was privileged to be born into a pastor’s home. He accepted the Lord as his Savior at the age of five. He attended and graduated from Great Hope Baptist School in Chesapeake, Virginia. After high school, Brother Godfrey attended Ambassador Baptist College where he received a bachelor’s degree in Bible and Pastoral Studies. After his junior year of college, he married Kristin, his childhood sweetheart. He then began working full-time at Ambassador Baptist College as the Men’s Dormitory Supervisor. After three years, God moved the Godfrey family to Chesapeake, Virginia where Brother Godfrey became a staff member of Great Hope Baptist Church and School with the goal of getting some local church experience before pastoring. After six months, God opened the door for Brother Godfrey to begin serving as the Youth Pastor of Great Hope Baptist Church. He had the privilege of working for his father, Pastor John W. Godfrey Sr., for the next five and half years. During the six years that Pastor Godfrey was in Chesapeake, he attended Tabernacle Baptist Theological Seminary and graduated with a Master of Religious Education degree. God has blessed the Godfrey family with six wonderful boys. On November 13, 2011 Brother Godfrey accepted the pastorate of Immanuel Baptist Church in Clifton Forge, Virginia, and it is his desire to have a ministry founded on Biblical preaching and focused on building families.

The statement “every problem is a communication problem” is so true when it comes to the area of athletics. There is probably no way to over stress the importance of communication when it comes to running a Christian school athletic program. How you communicate internally and what you communicate externally will make or break your program. Administrators, Athletic Directors, Coaches, and teachers have to be unified in their schedules and message. Student Athletes and Parents have to be plugged in. A communication breakdown can cripple any activity and can cause needless conflict.

The Bible is the Word of God! It is God’s revelation about Himself, His will, and His plan for mankind. It is the heart of God communicated in the vehicle of three specific languages – Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. God chose the written word as an eternal vehicle of revelation. The Psalmist declared that the God of heaven has magnified His word above His name.(Ps 138:2) God has exalted His written revelation to a level of eternal preeminence and yet the willful ignorance of the Word of God and its original languages among believers is shocking. Instead of endearing believer’s hearts to the Biblical languages we have created a vacuum of complacency. There are people groups all over the world who do not have a copy of the Scriptures in their native tongue. We desperately need translations of the Bible but before we can have translations we must have translators. Where will these translators come from? Do we really want the lost world providing translators? Do we really want the liberal denominations who do not even believe in the authority of Scripture filling this void? The answer is a resounding No! Fundamental Independent Baptist must take up this banner. We must fill this void by equipping the next generation with the knowledge of Biblical languages and a love for the Word of God.

I once heard someone say that experience is the best teacher. This is not true! Instruction is the best teacher and that is why God chose to reveal Himself and His will through the written Word. Experience is the hardest teacher. There are very few responsibilities in Christian Education that can be as demanding and trying as running an athletics program. The experience gained in this arena is truly one of the hardest of teachers. Let me help you skip some hard-learned lessons.

One of the greatest pitfalls of any Christian School can be their athletic program. When approached in a Biblically balanced way an athletics program can be a tremendously effective tool in shaping the character and integrity of young people. Sadly, when an athletics program is structured around a secular philosophy it becomes a Pandora’s box of carnality. If we as Christians are to do all to the Glory of God should not our athletics program conform to this principle?
