Where can you go to reach America and its future leaders? Where can you find atheists and agnostics from all over the world, Muslims from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran or Buddhists and Hindus from China, Thailand, and Japan? The answer to these questions is the colleges and universities of America! The college campus is quite possibly one of the most powerful launching points from which to reach the world with the Gospel.
We are told that roughly 70% of 18-22 year olds who regularly attend church stop attending during this age. Where are these young people at? 79% of high school graduates attend some form of higher education by the second year after graduation with 88% attending by the age of 26. The vast majority of young people can be found at the college campuses. Studies show that we are reaching only .00001% of the student population. With over 7,000 colleges and universities, you will find roughly seventy-five campus ministries from like-minded churches. We must go to the college campus to reach these young people with the Gospel!
Another tremendous aspect to reaching college students is the fact that the world has come to the campuses of America. The 2016-17 school year was the eleventh straight year in a row that the international student population hit a record high with 1,078,822 students studying in America. The average college campus is represented by forty to eighty nations. Many of these students come from countries listed as restricted, hostile, or unreached by missionary efforts such as China, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Kuwait, and Vietnam.
Think of the opportunity that God is giving the church in America to reach young people from many different countries around the world.
Many colleges that I have researched have representation from well over a hundred different countries. Think of the opportunity that God is giving the church in America to reach young people from many different countries around the world. These international students today may be world leaders tomorrow. Did you know that many current and former world leaders studied at an American University? Below is a list of just ten of over three hundred world leaders that received their education at an American University.
- Jordan - Abdullah Bin Al-Hussein (King of Jordan) - Georgetown University
- Israel - Benjamin Netanyahu (Prime Minister) - Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- China - Ma Ying-jeou (President) - New York University & Harvard
- Columbia - Juan Manuel Santos (President) - University of Kansas & Harvard
- Afghanistan - Hedayat Amin-Arsala (Former Vice-President) - Southern Illinois University
- Honduras - Carlos Roberto Flores (Former President) - Louisiana State University
- Chile - Ricardo Lagos Escobar (Former President) - Duke University
- Bangladesh - Lajuddin Ahmed (Former President) - University of Wisconsin
- Indonesia - Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (Former President) - Webster University
- Panama - Martin Torrijos (Former President) - Texas A&M
The door is not closed to carry the Gospel to these campuses, it is wide open! God has provided a tremendous door of opportunity to establish a student initiated ministry on the college campus through a sponsoring local church that the school recognizes! We are witnessing ministries being established with both American and international students believing on Jesus Christ. Students are growing in their faith, connecting and serving in the local church, making strong friendships with other believers, and are active in outreach in the community and on their campus!
Do you want to learn more about this amazing door God has provided to get the Gospel to the colleges and universities? Collegians for Christ is a local church ministry that assists churches in establishing ministries that are approved by the school on their local campuses. We provide the necessary training, tools, and resources to start, maintain, and grow an effective ministry.
We are excited about the opportunity to be a part of the Loving and Leading Conference this November! Join us at the conference where you can learn in detail about how to establish a ministry on the college campus, ways of ministering to international students, how to confront unbelief, and the importance of the local church in a college student’s life.
